Dr. Fate - Might

The magical based characters are probably some of my favorite characters. The concept of snapping a finger and having everything change is a great power to have. Thanks to comics, books and movies we have learned that with “great power comes great responsibility” and there is a price to pay for the great powers used. Dr. Fate had to pay for his use of magic. He became a Lord of Order seeking the Balance between Order and Chaos. This is a high price to pay and a heavy weight to carry upon one’s shoulders.

Might

“This is not a matter of Might. It’s not a question of Power…It’s an issue of Will.” - Dr. Fate*

There have been many to wear the Helm of Fate, the Amulet of Anubis, the cloak of Destiny and the Moniker of Dr. Fate. Kent Nelson is the golden age, Dr. Fate. After Kent’s Archaeologist parents were accidentally killed in the Egyptian tomb of the wizard, Nabu. The ancient Nabu took pity on Kent and raised him in the ways of magic and the Laws of Order and Chaos giving to Kent the Helm, Amulet and Cloak. Kent would become a member of the Justice Society and meet his wife Inza Nelson. The two lovers would build the Tower of Fate and try to keep Order and Chaos in balance. Dr. Fate would use magics to keep him and Inza young. Eventually these magics cease to work, Kent and Inza Nelson passed on to the Greater Realms. The moniker of Dr. Fate would soon be passed down to others worthy of Nabu and his magics.

We have heard all about power and “might makes right.” The Taoist believes that the soft and weak are the best weapons. The Quakers are committed to peace and treating each other equally without violence. How we treat others and move forward can be boiled down to the “will”. Are we fighting against or working toward? Members of Alcoholics Anonymous speak of aligning their “will” with a Higher Power. Look at water. We think water is the weakest of elements, but the drips of water can whittle away great mountains. Water has aligned itself with the Cycles. It is easier to go with the flow and follow the cycles. For people – who has an easier life…People that fight and complain about everything or people that will peacefully stand up for themselves and go with the flow?

Al Pratt (the original Atom) & Work & Sweat

The one thing that can be confusing about comic books and superheroes are their alternate timelines, other realities or the original characters. Al Pratt, the original Atom, is one of those characters. He is from the golden age of comics (1940). Then in 1961 when Ray Palmer became the new Atom we lost touch of Al Pratt. But DC would move Al and the rest of the Golden Age Justice Society of America to Earth 2. It all became confusing especially when there were cross-overs. All the different story-lines of Al Pratt, was his size and his lack of power. If there is anything to learn from Al Pratt it was to work hard and prepare for the job at hand.

Work and Sweat

“…But I had to Work and Sweat under a top-notch fight trainer named Joe Morgan, for every muscle I’ve got! " - Al Pratt (the original Atom)*

Albert “Al” Pratt was a 5’1”, 98 pound weakling and could not impress his childhood dream girl, Mary James. So Al started to train with Joe Morgan, the same trainer that trained Wildcat and the Guardian. Having no powers Al Pratt would eventually put on a mask to become a “mystery man” and then become a founding member of the Golden Age Justice Society of America. Taking the name Atom, He would fight alongside some of the strongest superheroes known to the Golden Age.

OK so we all don’t have super powers, but we can work hard and try our best to be better people. After a job well done we feel good about our job. We feel good about ourselves – mentally, physically and spiritually. We feel a sense of pride. The harder the job the better the feeling. Keep in mind after a job well done there is the opportunity to retire and rest. We are trying to build something: a good life, our dreams and great opportunities. Colin Powell says it best, “A dream doesn’t become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work.” Go for it; work hard building your dreams!

Warlord - Growing Up

One of my favorite artists is Mike Grell. I first became aware of his work with the Legion of Superheroes. I read anything he worked on Green Arrow, Sable, Tarzan and Warlord. His work was one of the inspirations that inspired me to create my own art. His work helped me through my rough childhood.

Growing Up

“That’s not even a question. You go with what you grew up with.” - Mike Grell

Skartaris, the hollow Earth, where the Sun never sets, and time means very little. For Vietnam Veteran Travis Morgan, Skartaris became home when he flew his SR-71 through a hole into hollow Earth. With his .44 pistol and a sword he became Skartaris’ protector, the Warlord. Travis Morgan finds many lovers and fathers children. Unbeknownst to Morgan, his friend Tinder, is his son Joshua Morgan. The evil Deimos pits Tinder and Travis in a battle to the death. It is during this battle that Travis is mortally wounded, and Joshua finds his father. Joshua Morgan takes up the mantel of the Warlord. A child of Skartaris the new Warlord protects and serves the only home he knows.

This is not a happy story for sure. Many of us can claim that our childhood was difficult. Growing up is hard – the growing pains do HURT. But we can let the pain make us stronger. Instead of suffering let it inspire us to move forward. Then we can use the pleasant memories to inspire us to be even STRONGER. Let the positive move us even farther. Remember treating ourselves like precious objects will make us strong. Use what you “grew up with” both positive and negative.

Hiro Nakamura - Keep Joy & Dignity Alive

A few years ago, I really enjoyed the TV show “Heroes”. One of my favorite characters was Hiro Nakamura. His geekiness and naivete always made me smile. I always saw a little of myself in him. With Hiro there was always hope.

Keep Joy & Dignity Alive

“I had a friend once. She knew she was dying but that didn’t push her off her path. She told me to keep joy and dignity alive even in the face of death.” - Hiro Nakamura *

Japanese geek, Hiro Nakamura, is an evolved human with the ability to bend space and time to his will. He teleports to New York City but it is five years in the future. NYC has been destroyed by a nuclear blast. Hiro and his best friend Ando set out to save the world. Being a comic geek Hiro believes it is his destiny to save people and save the world. He believes that destiny will lead him to the place or person he needs to save.

How can we keep joy and dignity alive let alone facing death? It’s actually easy. First off never lose Hope. If we have hope, joy is not that far away. Then all we have to do is nurture dignity. Dignity is in basic terms, how we conduct ourselves. Do we act hopeful and joyful? Do we speak to others with hope and joy? Do we appreciate hope and joy? No matter the situation there is always hope. If we let hope and joy lead us in conduct, speech, appreciation and self-respect then we will be keeping “joy and dignity alive” even in the face of death.

Red Tornado - Declaration

Poor Red Tornado, just because he is an Android he gets destroyed so often it has become humorous. I have thoroughly enjoyed his portrayal in shows like Batman: The Brave and The Bold (Warner Bros. 2008-2011) and Young Justice (Warner Bros. 2010-2011). Red Tornado is a very complex and interesting character. He is that traditional Pinocchio story – an artificial being seeking to become human. We can examine the truest human nature through this android.

Declaration

“Declaration: You cannot mock love for it was love that created you!” - Red Tornado *

Supervillain, T.O. Morrow created an android to infiltrate the Justice League of America to gain secrets and find a way to defeat them. But like most plans by supervillains – the plan failed. The JLA was able to free the Red Tornado from T. O. Morrow’s control. Now the Red Tornado lives as a superhero and a controls the winds and atmospheric pressures with super speed and strength. Yes he is an android/robot but he has a secret identity, John Smith. He tries to live as a human and tries to express his feelings as a human. He has a relationship with Kathy Sutton and their adopted daughter Traya. In this makeshift family he is able to find one feeling that gives him great power – this power makes the robot human. That power is LOVE.

Love! What is it? The dictionaries tell us so many definitions. The religions tell us a different thing. Our parents tell us what love is often. And the dude sitting next to you on the “love seat” tells you a totally different thing. Let us put love in a context that a superhero can understand. Love is a power. Would you not agree that any situation is made better with a tiny bit of love? You are arguing with a friend you decide to be a peacemaker and show them a little kindness then argument ceases – that is Love. You give a homeless person a sandwich. The smile they give in return is Love. The warmth you feel when someone you care about touches you ever so gently – that is Love. Why try to describe Love? Love is a power. With that power you can be a superhero! Go out and declare your Love!

Namor - Testament to My Sincerity

One of the oldest Marvel superheroes, Namor, the Sub-Mariner. Created in 1939, Namor, has a deep and rich history. He’s been a hero, villain, prince and beggar, sage and fool. He and his DC doppelganger, Aquaman, has always been favorites of mine. They both inspired me to seek a career in Marine Biology. Although, I am so glad I found Art instead.

Testament to My Sincerity

“You have heard the flowery phrases…and promises pregnant with hope…but promises are fragile as glass and more easily broken, while phrases are empty things when not bolstered by action. So, let my words and promises be soon forgotten…and let my deeds from this hour forth bear testament to my sincerity.” - Namor*

Captain Leonard McKensie of the icebreaker, Oracle, was traveling the Antarctic coast. Captain McKensie met and fell in love with the blue skinned Atlantean Princess Fen, the daughter of King Thakorr. The princess was sent to spy on the land dwellers. However falling in love was not part of the plan. Emperor Thakorr sent a force of Atlanteans to retrieve Princess Fen and in the battle Captain McKensie and the crew were killed. Princess Fen gave birth to a pink skinned boy. He would grow to become Prince Namor, the Sub-Mariner. Prince Namor has been the son of the sea, son of the land, a hero, a villain, prince and beggar, sage and fool. His main purpose has always to be an honorable protector of the sea.

Here is a good opportunity to discuss Integrity. Being honest and displaying strong principles are seen as having integrity. Integrity is also when something is whole and undivided. Prince Namor had the right idea. Making promises and speeches are only part of the idea. There must be action. Integrity is when our words and actions are the same. If we promise it, if we say it then we should do it and believe it. The more integrity we gain the honorable our fellows will treat us. Today make a promise and keep it.

Silver Surfer - Peace

Another character I am fascinated by is the Silver Surfer, Norrin Radd. His ideas of Peace and acceptance always inspires me. He is the true idea of the peaceful hermit traversing the universe. There was a time I saw my life as a peaceful hermit just going through life. I still think it would be a glorious life.

Peace

“Amongst the mightiest, the most supposedly savage of Earth’s creatures I sit in peace. I dwell in safety; for food has been plentiful and no longer do we hunger. Unlike the humans that call you beast, there is no violence in your heart, no hint of avarice, no smoldering hate. Yet man who has won dominion all over this world is a stranger to peace.” - The Silver Surfer*

To save his peaceful planet, Zenn-La, Norrin Radd gave his life to become the “Herald of Galactus” seeking planets for Galactus, the Devourer of Worlds. Norrin Radd became the “Silver Surfer” to help his master find uninhabited planets rich in the life essence to eat. The high morality and peace Norrin Radd has, conflicted with his duties for Galactus and eventually the Silver Surfer was able to break free from his commitment, surfing through the universe in total peace.

What is peace? Where does it come from and how do we humans find peace? If the Silver Surfer, Norrin Radd was here he could tell us. But peace is in the heart; peace is in daily living. We are told as children to be “a peace maker,” to “turn the other cheek.” Peace is accepting people for what religion, for what nationality, what sexual preference, or home life they have. Peace is remembering that we all have the same feelings, the same desires, the same hopes and dreams. Peace is communicating saying what needs to be said without restraint, without hesitation, and without fear. Peace is treating others exactly the way we want to be treated.

Black Bolt - Stilled Heart

When Black Bolt and the “Inhumans” were introduced to the Fantastic Four I was truly excited. As a kid I connected with Black bolt and the other Inhumans because I was often told and reminded and told again different and weird I was. What I loved most about Black Bolt was his silence. To be that strong and powerful was mesmerizing. That connection is still very strong.

Stilled Heart

“Does your silent world admit a sense of irony, Monarch? …Life is a mockery. Populaces cheer when you but raise your arm—Electrons sigh away their energy at your merest mental command – But not all your pomp and power can make a stilled heart beat again – if stilled it be--!?” - The Narrator*

The “Inhumans” enigmatic friends of the Fantastic Four are human. They were prehistoric humans found by the conquering intergalactic Kree. These humans were experiment on using the “Terrigan Mist” a gas that embues the breather with a power or new genetic code that would enhance their personality or their chief characteristics. The Royal Family Gorgon, Karnak, Crystal, Triton, Queen Medusa and King Black Bolt rule the Inhumans. These Inhumans used to live in a hidden Himalayan city, Attilan also know as “The Great Refuge.” After the “Great Refuge was destroyed the Inhumans moved to the Blue side of the moon to New Attilan. King Black Bolt with the merest of thoughts can control the electrons around his body. He can channel them into great strength or the power of flight. But if he opens his mouth to make the slightest noise the power is devastating. So, to protect his people, his family and his wife Black bolt lives a life of silence. There have been times that he has to reap destruction to protect his people. At those times Black Bolt feels the greatest remorse. Black Bolt also accepts those feelings of fear, remorse, pain, suffering and devastation. But Black Bolts greatest gift is his people, his family and his wife – he finds he is never alone.

We are going to feel fear, remorse, pain, suffering and devastation. We are going to hurt, cry and suffer. There is no way around our feelings. But we are going to feel joy happiness and success also. Why run from the feelings? Why hide from the feelings? Feelings are the signposts on our path. Feelings and Change are inevitable why fight? Feel the feelings, accept the feelings and move forward in journey. Write about the feelings, talk about the feelings, feel the feelings. When we share our feelings, we find that we are not alone. And somehow, we survive.

Green Lantern (Kyle Rayner) - Fantasy World

As a kid Green Lantern, I would often think Green Lantern should be an artist. The combination of Creativity and Willpower would be awesome. Then 1994, Kyle Rayner, Freelance Artist, became a Green Lantern. I enjoyed his time as a Green Lantern. The story line, “Hate Crime”, from Green Lantern volume 3 #154-55 published in 2002, is a great and powerful comic book arc. I was impressed with the openness and the acceptance of the characters.

Fantasy World

“…I’m just an artist; I doodle in the margins of notepads; I daydream about color and form and monster trucks…I live half my life in a fantasy world…” - Green Lantern (Kyle Rayner) *

After the Destruction of Coast City, Green Lantern Hal Jordan went mad. As the villain Parallax, Hal Jordan destroyed the Green Lantern Corps. Ganthet the only surviving Guardian of the Universe gave the last surviving Power Ring to freelance artist Kyle Rayner. Kyle rejected the responsibility at first but grew into a powerful Green Lantern. Kyle and Ganthet were able to rebuild the Green Lantern Corps. Kyle was influential in the redemption and resurrection of Hal Jordan. The wearers of the Green Lantern’s ring create will empowered constructs. An artist, Kyle Rayner, was an awesome Green Lantern, he would think it, imagine it and then create.

There are two types of “fantasy worlds”, the negative where nothing ever works out and life is a struggle and then positive where everything is light and easy and happy. The truth, reality is a blending of both the negative and positive, Yin and Yang in a sense. We have to decide which path we will take the negative or positive.  As always, for the physical spiritual and emotional health the positive is the best path to take. From a creative point of view there is nothing wrong with a little daydreaming. Some of the greatest stories ever told evolved from doodles in the margins, daydreams of color, form and monster trucks or living in a fantasy world. Spend five minutes in a fantasy world today.

Arms Fall Off Boy - Pleasure of Creativity

Floyd Belkin, Arms Fall Off Boy, shows up on all the “Most Lame Superpower” lists. It’s true his power his lame. He can take his arms off and use them as a weapon. But let’s give, Arms Fall Off Boy, creator, Curt Swan, the appreciation he deserves. To have the guts to step out of the box and create such a character as, Arms Fall Off Boy, is true creativity.

Pleasure of Creativity

“…Perhaps this is the one true pleasure of creativity; the continuous surprise of ‘new’ discoveries.” - Curt Swan

In the 30th century, the Legion of Superheroes will become the supreme team of Superheroes, protecting the Galaxy from evil. When Legion auditions are held, everyone with a super power attempts to become members. The lines are long. Unfortunately, not everyone becomes a member. There has got to be some rejects. Some promising applicants are asked to join the Legion Academy while others join the Legion of Substitute-Heroes. While other rejects become super villains out of anger and resentment.  Probably the most interesting is the Legion reject, Floyd Belkin, Arms Fall Off Boy. Floyd can detach his arms and use them as weapons. Did Floyd let the rejection hinder his advancement as a hero? No, he joined the Heroes of Lallor as the hero, Splitter.

When we are creative we are often given a surprise. The surprise could be a feeling of accomplishment or it could be the acceptance gained from a friend (or stranger) that appreciates our efforts. The unfortunate thing is that when the word “Creativity” is used people immediately think of the arts. But creativity can appear in many forms – a cool pair of shoes, how dinner is cooked, writing a simple letter or getting from one end of the basketball court to the other. Sometimes creativity is stepping out of the box. When we see something as creative we are thinking out of the box. If we want people to recognize our creativity, then we must recognize other people’s creative efforts. Today bring a surprise to someone – recognize their creativity.

Catman - Messed Up

For a while Catman was very popular. He was one of Batman’s main villains. Then for whatever reason he fell off the grid and became a comically third-rate member of Batman’s Rogues Gallery. Eventually so obscure no one even knew who he was. Then a few years ago in the “Secret Six” comics Catman returned as a powerhouse - beefy, hot and bisexual. No longer a third-rate villain but an interesting anti-hero. The changes writers and artists put these characters through can in some ways mirror the changes we go through.

Messed Up

“Is it true you used to be fat?” (The Huntress)

"I used to be messed up. Then I wasn’t, so much. That’s all.” - Catman *

Some superheroes are villains forced into a life of heroism by the government to stay out of jail. This is the case of the Secret Six. The Secret Six is a government run organization comprised of villains trying to stay out of jail. Catman, aka Thomas Blake, is one of the villains. Catman was a world class trapper and hunter. He got bored and turned to crime. He got caught by Batman. Then Blake became a third-rate villain, lazy and fat. He decides to go back to Africa and live among the lions he once hunted. Blake’s health and fighting ability improved. This is where the Government found Catman. The pride of lions Catman lived with was killed by the Society of Villains; Catman seeks revenge through the Secret Six.

Catman’s story is interesting – for whatever reason to become fat and lazy then to find change again. There are other stories like that – real life stories. Go to meetings for Alcoholics, Addicts, or Overeaters and you’ll hear stories like that. These stories are inspiring. People do get messed up and do recover.  It is possible to hit a bottom and climb your way back up. It takes dedication, determination and discipline. It takes acceptance of the issue and it takes a positive attitude. But there must be Balance between the Physical (exercise), Emotional (sharing with friends) and Spiritual (connecting with the inner self). Also, Trust that whatever is messed up can get cleaned up.

Moon Knight - New Step

Marvel’s answer to Batman – Moon Knight. Honestly, they both do have a lot in common. Moon Knight, however, is more violent and more insane than Batman. I also find Moon Knight more tightly wound-up than Batman. That’s part of the reason I used this quote – Moon Knight would never be dancing around.

New Step

“The tempo is up and cookin and it’s time to DANCE! How’s that for a new step?” - Moon Knight*

Chicagoan, Marc Spector is a mercenary working in Egypt. He and his crew finds and ancient Egyptian tomb with idols of the Moon god, Khonshu. Trying to protect the treasures and his fellows from tomb robbers, Marc is beat to death. In the last moments of life Khonshu appears to Marc in a vision offering him the opportunity to become the Moon god’s knight. Upon awakening, Marc Spector returns to the states and using his mercenary funds acquires a small fortune. Marc Spector has three aliases, the first alias is Steve Grant, millionaire play boy, the second taxi driver, Jake Lockley and the third alias Marc Spector, the Moon Knight, superhero. Marc Spector is not alone is his fight. His pilot Jean-Paul “Frenchie” DuChamp, his secretary and lover Marlene, café owner Gena and her sons, and street informant Bertrand Crowley all help Moon Knight or his aliases protect the innocent.

Today let’s have a little fun! Rhythm and Tempo, the beat to a song gets us moving. There are so many people listening to music in their earphones. The people working out listen to music to find their pace. They find a rhythm or a cycle to their movement. We find a cycle to our movement through life as well. “…The Rhythm of Life is a powerful beat, puts a tingle in your fingers and a tingle in your feet…” (Rhythm of Life, by CY Coleman and Dorothy Fields) But sometimes we feel like a Slave to the Rhythm, “Work to the rhythm, Live to the rhythm, Love to the rhythm, Slave to the rhythm…” (Bruce Woolley, Simon Darlow, Steve Lipson, and Trevor Charles Horn) Our rhythm becomes BORING and slow or mundane. Is it ok to change? Of course, step to a new beat or change the song, it is perfectly OK. Do something different. Change the rhythm. Take a message from the “KLF, the Justified Ancients of Mumu” (The Jams), “Bring the beat back … New style, meanwhile, always on a mission while fishing in the rivers of life!” Today have fun dancing and moving to the Rhythm of Life!

Tigra - Fear of Change

The character Tigra has gone through some many changes. I liked watching Tigra go through these changes. It’s interesting to watch how writers and artists will change a character over the years. I enjoyed Tigra’s evolution. The character was totally at the whim of the writers. I wish change could be as easy as someone just rewriting your story line.

Fear of Change

“For a long time I let the fear of change keep me from doing what I really want to do.” - Tigra *

College student Greer Grant met police Officer Bill Nelson and feel in love. Their marriage was sweet however very short – bill was shot in the line of duty. Greer needed to find work, so she took a job with Dr. Joanne Tumulo, who was working on unlocking the human potential. Tumulo turned Shirlee Bryant into the villain, “the Cat”. Greer talked Tumulo into letting her undergo the experiment as well – donning the same costume Greer was able to bring the Cat into custody. Greer had adventures as “the Cat”, in the classic Gold and Black costume. HYDRA wanted the experiments by Tumulo. Tumulo and Greer tried to stop them when Greer was shot with a radiation gun. Tumulo took Greer to the “Cat People” (Tumulo is a member), an ancient tribe of people. They offered to heal Greer but that would mean she would become the Tigra. The Tigra is the protector of the Cat People. The Tigra possesses superhuman strength, retractable claws, speed, agility and heighted senses. Greer accepted the gift Tigra – protector of the innocent.

We can talk about often is fear. Fear prevents us from talking care of ourselves, accepting gifts, chasing our dreams or even taking the next spiritual step. To some, fear is to be afraid of or expect harm or expect failure. To others, fear is “Forget Everything And Run”. The opposite of fear is Hope. Whenever we experience fear it is hard to act. When fear is present we can turn our attention to Hope. Hope is always standing right behind fear. Hope is always present. No matter how dark the fear is Hope is always at the end of the tunnel. From other lessons change is a good thing – today fear will not prevent us from changing because Hope is always present.

Synapse - Express Yourself

I’ve been thinking a lot about the old game, City of Heroes. I go through periods of missing it and coming up with new heroes to create for the game. It was one of the most fun MMORPGs to play. Creating and leveling a hero was/is fun for me. In the comics for the game Synapse was one of the funniest characters. The really fun thing about Synapse, just like Madonna, he was always ready to express himself.

Express Yourself

“Sweet Sassy Molassy, it’s the motherload!” - Synapse *

Here’s a typical superhero origin story. Simple account, Steve Berry, working for the large corporation, Crey Industries, finds out the company is dealing illegally and tries to report the crime. The company kidnaps Steve and subjects him to scientific testing to keep his mouth shot. Because of this testing Steve Berry becomes the electrifying hero, Synapse. Paragon City, Rhode Island, the City of Heroes would be lost without Synapse. Being a super speedster Synapse is always quick with a comment. The heroes look forward to hearing his electrifying comments – funny and/or poignant.

Superheroes are unafraid to express themselves. If they think it, they will probably say it, no matter how silly or whimsical it may be. No matter how poignant or angry it may be. Expressing one’s self in a conversation is important.  Yes, we would not or should not use slang in speaking with the President, our bosses or our ministers but we can express our true selves in elegant and productive ways. But also, if something good happens – get excited and express it. If something bad happens express the sadness. Expressing our selves is how we let the world get to know us. The expression of one’s self is the truest form of a spiritual connection. Any Higher Power would ask you to express that love, devotion or feeling. It is in the expression that we move forward in our relationships – Physically, Spiritually and Emotionally.

Luke Skywalker - Full of Surprises

One of the most heroes of all time is Luke Skywalker. The heroic kid that saved his family and brought Balance back to the Force. I am waiting patiently (to the best of my ability) to finds out what happens in the next upcoming movie. But it’s been a 40-year wait. I’m positive there will be surprises galore.

Full of Surprises

“You’ll find I’m full of surprises.” - Luke Skywalker *

In a galaxy far, far away…the villainous Darth Vader was once a Jedi Knight named Anakin Skywalker. Anakin Skywalker secretly married Padme’ Amidala. As Skywalker became Vader, Padme’ gave birth to twins. To protect the children, one child, Leia was hidden on the planet Alderaan and Luke was hidden on Tatooine. On Tatooine, Luke Skywalker lived a normal life as a farmer until the war between the Republic and Empire came to his farm. Through a series of events Luke met Obi-Wan Kenobi, an old Jedi Knight. Luke learned the ways of the force and became a Jedi Knight – the last Jedi Knight. Luke faced his father Darth Vader and brought his father back to the Light Side bringing balance to the Force.

Victory comes to those with surprise moves. The winner normally exhibits something different. Usually the underdog will develop something new just to be able to compete with the stronger faster contestants. It is best to keep the surprises hidden. This reminds us to always do our best, practice our best. In the practicing we will develop ways to become better.  This also reminds us of the Tao Te Ching’s suggestion from chapter 39, “Do not desire to shine like jade but wear ornaments as if they were stone.” To hide one’s strength is humility.

The Fly - Invitation

I know nothing of the Fly. I’ve only read one comic book about the Fly. I do find him confusing but interesting at the same time. Very similar to car accident – too horrible to look at but can’t stop looking. It’s difficult to get the comics now but it would be nice to learn more about the Fly.

Invitation

“‘Thanks for the invitation,’ said the fly to the spider!” - The Fly *

Thomas “Tommy” Troy was an orphan and found a home with Ben and Abigail March. In their attic he finds a ring and as he cleans it a wizard, Turan, of the “Fly People” appears. Turan explains the story of the Fly People. Whenever Tommy rubs the ring and says, “I wish I were a fly” he switches bodies with a member of the “Fly People” and becomes a superhero, the Fly. The Fly has the exponential strength and flight of a fly. He has size manipulation and insect telepathy. But this fly is never caught in a Spider’s web …for too long.

We all know what happens when the Spider invites the Fly to the web. Today let’s take a lesson from Mary Howitt’s poem, “The Spider and the Fly.” Those silly flattering words, that people use to beguile and confuse other people. There are people that for whatever reason don’t give the clear meanings or full descriptions. Accept those people for who they are and learn from their mistakes. If we are confused then something is not right. Ask questions! Get the answers to clear the confusion. We do not have to accept invitations if we do not have a clear image of what is happening. If after clearing the air and the reasons are just and right say,”Yes.”  Also remember, it is perfectly find to ask questions and then say, “No Thank You, Mr. Spider.”

Monica Rambeau - Healing

It didn’t even occur to be that I reached the 100-day mark of this little project. Today is 101. What better way to celebrate than one of my favorite characters of all time, Monica Rambeau. This New Orleans police captain trying to prevent villains from creating a dastardly and other worldly weapon, Monica is exposed a strange dimensional energy. The result from this exposure is Monica can convert her form into any type of energy. Using her newly found powers she takes the name Captain Marvel and fights crime. Although she has gone through several names changes, my favorite being Photon, she is one of my favorite characters on my list for three reasons. One, she is from Louisiana, two, she is the first African-American heroine on the Avengers and thirdly, she rocked a Super-foxy Afro.

Healing

“I’ve never lost what you have, Steve, but I know that we must mourn for our losses. If we don’t, we can never heal.” - Monica Rambeau (Captain Marvel) *

Let’s not even discuss how many Captain Marvels there are in the world, the one we will discuss today is currently calling herself Spectrum, Monica Rambeau. Through a series of events she gain the power to turn herself into any kind of light or wavelength. Being a lieutenant in the New Orleans police force Monica Rambeau originally called herself “Captain Marvel”, eventually changing her name to Photon, Pulsar and Spectrum. Let’s face it superheroes loose so much, lives, families, secret identities and daily living. But if loss is also a daily event, healing is also a daily event.

People, places and things come and go in our lives daily. Sometimes our loss is small and insignificant but there are times that our loss is great and painful. It is at those times that we turn to our friends and family for support. We find our support from those that have suffered from loss also. Then one day when we are through the loss and strong again we will be there for a friend. Our friend maybe going through the same loss and we know exactly what to say to help them. We help them mourn and this completes our healing process.

Ultraman - Stupid Things

Ultraman was so fun to watch on Public Television when I was growing up. Those very cliché’ TV shows molded me into the cliché I am today. HA! But seriously a good old cliché’ can really help me out when I need some inner strength or resolve. They can bring me hope.

Stupid Things

“They say any landing you can walk away from is a good one…Now that I think about it; people say a lot of stupid things.” - Jack Shindo*

Science Patrolman, Shin Hayata was on the scene when the monster Bemular attacked earth. Bemular was followed by Ultraman. In the battle Hayata was badly injured. To save his life and honor his sacrifice Ultraman merged their two bodies and minds, becoming Japan’s premiere superhero Ultraman.. Now whenever Ultraman is needed Hayata only needs to operate the “Beta Capsule” and Ultraman arrives to save the day.

Humans do say some “stupid things” but they still remind us to act accordingly or to remember there is always a “silver-lining”. Walking away from an accident alive is a good thing.  Here’s a good one, “Life hands you a lemon…Make lemonade.” Growing up our parents would say, “You made your bed now lay in it.” How many of us thought this cliché was truly about the bed? Good thing we learned that how we treat or react to people, or situations create the type of rest we receive at night. Here’s another, “sleep tight, don’t let the bed bugs bite.” Let’s live in a way that the “Bed Bugs” won’t bite. Let’s remember, the great Grandmotherly Colloquialism, “Can’t be grateful and hateful at the same time.”  Sometimes it is joyful and hopeful to sit and share these “stupid” clichés and colloquialisms. In sharing them we find out in ourselves what they mean.

Tonto - Trouble

Despite the stereotypical characterization of him, Tonto was one of my favorite characters. He was like the Green Hornet’s Kato. The better fighter, the one to solve the problem and was always there for the rescue. I loved him because the minority was the true hero. I would watch the Lone Ranger, Green Hornet and even Batman for the sidekicks – they were always better than the “hero”. The hero could never face the trouble without their sidekick.

Trouble

“Trouble find Tonto even when him not look for it.” - Tonto *

Seeking for gold two gold miners using dynamite caused an explosion in a mine. Tonto, a young Native American was trapped by the explosion. He was saved by a Texas Ranger, John Reid. A few years later when Tonto came across Reid’s body after an ambush he recognized Reid immediately. He nursed Reid back to health. Reid and Tonto developed a friendship and became the Lone Ranger and Tonto, bringers of justice to the Old West.

Trouble! We are fully aware of trouble, we have experienced it many times. It can be an old funny annoying clown to some or a specter of evil to others. Either way we all have met trouble before. How we deal with trouble is the question? Do we run from it or face it head on? It depends on the situation. In every situation there will be some kind of trouble but look at trouble as part of the cycle – part of the journey. Solve the issue and move forward. Maybe take steps to prevent some trouble; sharpen pencils, check tires or pack extra socks. Today when trouble appears look at it smile and move forward.
