Batwoman - Best Dinner in Town

The original Batwoman, was always so well-mannered and polite. Even when she was fighting crime she had good manners. I try to be well mannered and polite as well. On this day let me remember to say, “thank you.” I live by that old southern charm of politeness. I always send “thank you” cards. I am always giving my friends hugs for the littlest of gestures. I always want to remember to show my gratitude.

Best Dinner in Town

“Thank you all! Let me treat you to the best dinner in town…” - Batwoman*

Katherine (Kathy) Kane was raised in the circus as an acrobat and daredevil. She was also the heiress of a vast fortune. Kathy Kane had a secret love for Batman. Like Bruce Wayne, using her skills and fortune she created the identity Batwoman. Eventually she realizes Batman is not interested and the dangers are too great and goes into retirement. Kathy Kane becomes a good and trusted friend of Bruce Wayne. Sometimes Kathy Kane can be lead out of retirement to solve minor mysteries.

There is nothing wrong with showing gratitude. It is nice when someone does something helpful or nice. Be sure to say, “thank you”. Don’t let kindness go unrewarded – even if it is a heartfelt expressed “thank you”. Some people think that those fast running out the door thank yous are good enough. No, they are not. Friends truly want to hear the emotions and feelings in the gratitude. There is nothing wrong with keeping a set of thank you cards handy. Fixing friends a gratitude dinner can be fun and a reason to party. We can walk up to helpful friends give them a hug and say, “Thank you for your help today. It means a lot to me.” Remember the more we share the stronger we become.

Dr. Strange - Giving Back

Dr. Stephen Strange is one of my favorite characters. Following his journey of grandiosity and selfishness to a contemplative spiritual human being is truly amazing. I want to remember to give back what was so generously given to me. I think that’s part of the reason why I am a teacher. With that said the 5th graders participated in a food drive. We talked about gratitude and being giving. Some of them really showed up and gave back.

Giving Back

Charity Work! You've got to be joking, Dr. Benton! These are the most talented hands in the annals of medicine! They don't touch a band-aid for anything but cash!” - Dr. Stephen Strange

Poor Dr. Stephen Strange, he was one of the greatest surgeons and healers of the 20th Century but he was also one of the grandiose and selfish surgeons. His steady hands were part of his success but then a car accident removed his ability to hold a steady scalpel. After many attempts to heal himself Stephen Strange found a Tibetan monk – the Ancient One. The Ancient One was actually the Sorcerer Supreme. Stephen Strange learned that his hands were not the whole sum of his success. To make a long story short Stephen Strange through a series of events and trials Stephen Strange became the new “Sorcerer Supreme”. And Stephen Strange redeems himself by healing, protecting, and mastering the mystic realms as Doctor Strange, Sorcerer Supreme.

The greatest lesson Doctor Strange learned was to give back – give back what was so generously given to him. We can learn these lessons as well. A person smiles we should smile back. Years ago, in school your Mom taught you, patiently, the 3 times tables – now help your office mate proof their document with a patient smile. Help your 80-year-old neighbor with her groceries. We move forward by giving back.

Booster Gold - Friends

Booster Gold and Blue Beetle (Ted Kord) were the best of friends. I loved their friendship. They were always present for each other. I would be lost without my “Good Judys”. Without friends it is difficult maneuver through this chaotic world.

Friends

“I’d hate to have to face life without my best buddy around. Who’d I steal jokes from?” - Booster Gold *

Everyone needs a friend, even superheroes.  Friends can help carry a burden or lighten a stressful situation. One of the most popular superhero friendships is Booster Gold and the Blue Beetle. One is never far from the other. Michael Jon Carter from the 30th Century wanted to make a name for him in the past. So, Michael borrowed time traveling technology, a suit that gives him a force field, power blast, and limited super strength, and a ring that allows flight. Upon arriving to the 20th Century Michael became Booster Gold. After joining the Justice League of America, Booster met Beetle and the two have been inseparable.

With whom can we find adventure, community, and our heart’s desire? Who will help us get to know ourselves, help us adjust our attitudes and laugh with us? What kind people offer gifts, charity, lessons and changes?  Who has the nerve to give judgments? Who are steadfast in our lives? Only those people we call friends. Friends can lift the burdened from our shoulders. We can be free for just a moment and laugh with our friends. Sharing with a friend daily will change the world in unimaginable and super-heroic ways.

The Mighty Isis - Deity

I remember watching “The Secrets of Isis” every Saturday morning. It was so interesting from a kid’s point of view. I loved the archaeology point of view. Isis was one the reasons I became so interested in Art History and Archaeology. The idea of different deities intrigued me as well. Today I find all the different ways to practice a spiritual life just as interesting.

Deity

“Oh Mighty Isis!” - Andrea Thomas *

“The Mighty Isis” is an Egyptian Goddess and is the archetypal wife and mother. Her name literally means “Queen of the Throne” and her emblem is that of an Egyptian Throne. So Andrea Thomas, a High School Science teacher is out on a summer archeological dig when she finds a beautiful amulet. When Andrea placed the mystically powerful amulet around her neck she was transformed into “The Mighty Isis.” Andrea now finds she has great strength, the ability to move inanimate objects, the power to fly and to run at super speed. Whenever Isis is needed Andrea holds up the Amulet and says, “Oh Mighty Isis!” then Andrea instantly becomes the Egyptian Goddess. Isis uses her powers for good capturing criminals, solving mysteries, stopping prejudice, and preventing disasters. Isis appears when needed and solves the problem before or right in the nick of time, typical for any deity.

It is Ok to have a deity and believe in a power greater than ourselves. We all have our deities we follow. That is the wonderful thing about living on Earth we have a choice in deities. There are so many different religions that we can find the right one for us to follow. Religions give a great sense of community and a strong sense of family. We learn and grow in these faith-based communities. What about those however, that do not believe in a deity? That’s OK too! The point here is to have a spiritual life. We can seek something greater – even if it is not a god. Even the most serious agnostic or atheist believe in something greater. It may be the sunrise and sunset. It may be the love from a best friend. Everyone puts his or her faith into something or someone. There are people out there that sing every morning “Help me Rhonda, help, help me, Rhonda,” or “Good morning Starshine, the world says hello. You twinkle above us we twinkle below.”  There are people that talk to their coffee cups named, “Henry”. There are people sitting on their balconies just feeling the breeze. Who’s to say they are not seeking “Good Orderly Direction”? A spiritual life is personal, and we have many choices to choose.

Blue Devil - Good Citizen

One of my favorite comics, Shadowpact was about a misfit team of magic based heroes. They set out to save the world and fix what was wrong with magic. I loved how they worked together and really stuck by each other. Blue Devil was one of these heroes. He always stood up for the little guy. My idea of a “good citizen” comes straight from the comics I’ve read.

Good Citizen

“…If Shockwave gets away with that stuff, he’ll be able to take out Superman, right? And since Superman’s…the living symbol of “Truth, Justice, Etcetera, and so forth – I as a Good Citizen just can’t let that happen.” - Blue Devil*

Some superheroes are created through weird situations. They become heroes despite the situation. Daniel Patrick Cassidy, Danny to his friends, is a hi-tech stunts man and actor. He is hired to play and create an exoskeleton for the movie, “The Blue Devil”. This suit has added strength and built-in stunt and special effects systems. While on sight, two of the actors accidentally unleash a “real demon”, Nebiros. While in the Blue Devil stunt suit, Danny takes a mystical blasts and the suit becomes part of Danny – his flesh and blood. He gains powers based on the suits stunt abilities, super jump, super strength, enhanced vision, hearing and healing. He can also recognize demons and send them back to Hell using his trident. Through a series of events Danny becomes the Blue Devil, a “good citizen” and superhero.

What is a definition of a “good citizen”? Besides the political views and voting in elections or the recycling for the environment, what makes a good citizen? A good citizen respects his fellows despite race, creed or color. This citizen will put the needs of others first, helping his neighbor in times of need. The citizen will be seen in the neighborhood and will report crime. They respect the laws of the community they live. The good citizen realizes the rights of others are his rights as well. This citizen is hardworking and productive for the neighborhood. The good citizen will speak to his neighbors getting to know them, recognizing strangers in the neighborhood. When conflicts arise the good citizen will listen and try to work out issues peacefully and calmly.

Giant - A Giant Among Men

The thing I like most about this project is that I come across heroes I know nothing about. This story of Giant piqued interest. I would like to know more. It’s so fun to find an obscure comic or superhero and then become inspired.

A Giant Among Men

“YES! I will be a giant among men! I will do all those things and more!” - Giant*

The year 1932, in the Egyptian desert, an archaeological dig is taking place. A strange Greek tomb has been found in Egypt. Melissa D’Arque and William Johnson are leading the dig. Upon finding the burial tomb Melissa is possessed by the tombs inhabitant becoming the villain Dark Malice. Upon her departure the tomb collapses trapping William inside. Just before his death Zeus appears to William offering him an opportunity to become more than mortal, to become the world’s champion and to use the power wisely. William accepts the offer and is granted a harness that gives a portion of Zeus’ power to the wearer. William finds he has great strength, a healing factor, can grow to great heights making his strength greater. William finds he can focus Zeus’ lightning into blasts. These gifts come with a price, when the harness is removed William becomes human and ages. Also, if he uses too much power he becomes weakened and must rest. William Johnson takes the name Giant and sets out to inspire a new age of heroes.

“A giant among men,” how many times have we heard this or variations of this phrase? Every hero we read about is told at some point in their story to be great, to be a giant or to be inspiring. We find however the truest of heroes do not want the job, but they take on the mantle of hero because no one else will or can. Is it possible for the everyday man to do great things? YES! We see heroes all the time do great things. However, the lowly teacher can be heroic when she stops a bully from harassing a student. Returning a Smartphone left on the subway to a person can be heroic. Speaking to a friend honestly from the heart can be heroic.

Triplicate Girl - Join the One

Triplicate Girl has always been one of my favorite Legionnaires. The Balance (PSE) that comes with of her power is important to me. I seek Balance (PSE) in my life daily. But also, when she and Chuck Taine, Bouncing Boy, got married was important to my overweight gay lonely self. Here was a person that accepted another person for all their flaws. It let me know that at least in a fictional world all people were accepted for who they were.

Join the One

“All join the One. One binds the all. The beginning meets the end. Such is the cycle of Life.” - Triplicate Girl*

Luornu Durgo is from the planet Cargg. Cargg has three suns and because of this all Carggites can become three separate people then rejoin to become one person. Eventually Luornu journeyed to Earth to join the 30th Century Legion of Superheroes to become Triplicate Girl. Each one of Luornu’s selves had a separate personality with certain characteristics – the first is Physical, the second is Spiritual and the third is Emotional. When she returns to her one-person self she becomes a fully actualized person. However each self was a separate entity and could act separate from the others but each was Luornu Durgo. During one of their missions the Legion was trying to defeat “Computo, the Conqueror” the insane Artificial Intelligence. One of Lournu’s selves was destroyed and Triplicate Girl became Dou Damsel. Soon Luornu met and fell in love with Bouncing Boy – Chuck Taine. The two left the active duty of the Legion to become teachers for the Legion Academy.

Luornu Durgo is very lucky. She is in tune with herself – so much so she is in Balance. We often her people speak of Balance – Physical, Spiritual and Emotional. It would be lovely to be in perfect balance without conflict between our physical, spiritual and emotional selves. The answer is easy. Just realize that there is only one self with three parts. Each part participates fully. It is the cycle of life. Here is a daily challenge to help combine the One and find Balance. Each day do Physical exercise but while doing the exercise do something Spiritual (repeat a mantra or prayer) and finally complete the task with something Emotional by journalizing or sharing the experiences with a friend.

Iron Fist - Alone

For whatever reasons I tend to think that I am going through this life alone. I know I am not alone, I have many friends and family I can call when I need help or to whom I can share the good news. But I still struggle with my ideas of solitude, perfection and doubt, even in my relationship with Stephen. I’m lucky that Stephen forces me to be upfront and honest – to be an active part of our relationship. He wants me to share my life with him and I want him to share his with me. We’re never alone.

Alone

“…Sometimes we get so wrapped up in our own drama we forget we’re not alone on this stage.” - Iron Fist*

As a young man Wendell Rand, a wealthy entrepreneur found the mystical city of K’un-L’un. Years later He, his wife, Heather and their son Daniel tried to return to K’un-L’un. On the journey Wendell and Heather were killed. Nine year old Daniel found the mystical city alone. He was raised in K’un-L’un by Lei Kung. Daniel was trained in the martial arts and he became the best of Lei Kung’s students. Daniel Rand must complete a task to gain the strength to be the K’un-L’un protector and gain the power to bring his parent’s murder to justice. The task defeat the dragon known as Shou-Lao the Undying and plunge Daniel’s fists into the “molten heart” the dragon guards.  Daniel Rand defeated the dragon, plunged his fist into the molten heart. Now whenever Daniel focuses his chi he can turn his fists into something of iron. Daniel Rand returned to New York City and became the Immortal Iron Fist. Daniel Rand accomplished a lot alone. But he is the first to remind us we are not alone.

We are never truly alone. Take a moment and think about your journey. There are people along the way that helps you – parents, friends even strangers. We may win the race, or achieve the recognition but we never fully “did it alone”. But “sometimes we get so wrapped up in our own drama we forget we’re not alone on this stage.” We get so wrapped up in our own anxiety, fear and negativity that we forget there is a wealth of family and friends willing and ready to help. We may not want the help or advice but still it is nice to just tell someone that we had a “crappy day” or we got that raise yesterday. There are people who actually care who will walk with us – all we have to do is ask. Today call a friend just to chat and break the solitude.

Bud - Cool World

Our world is a very cool place to live. My time in Spain, and the Pyrenees have reawakened my excitement for the world around me.

Cool World

“Is this a cool world or what?” - Bud*

In the distant future our world will be plagued with wars. All sorts of weapons will be used that will leave the planet decimated. The inhabitants of Earth will mutate into hideous mutants. A robotic scientist, Dr. Kildare will collect six mutants for an experiment that will repair their genetic birthright. The experiment worked – Ackroyd, Tanya, Shannon, Bud, Piper and Dillon became the first Ex-Mutants. Their hope is to repair their world and bring peace to the planet still plagued with war.

When we open our eyes to wonder we can see things differently. One day look out the window and just watch the world. Even from top of a skyscraper in New York the world is a wondrous place. Talk to a child and find their excitement. Our world is very cool. Our world is wondrous. Look at a sunset/sunrise - it’s beautiful. Watch the cycles of the moon. Notice the changing of the seasons, the turns of the tides or watch the coming of a storm and feel the change in pressure. Our world is a wondrous place to live. We should keep that wonder in our minds and hearts. In so doing we may prevent a planet decimated by war.

Neo - Day to Day

Day to day life – suiting up and showing up even when you don’t want to go to work. This is exactly where I am at today. I know I’ll have a five-day weekend soon so today I can show up and do my job. Who knows I might be needed.

Day to Day

“Even though they are such fantastical characters and situations, it's still a man trying to figure it out. These motifs of messiahs and heroes and anti-heroes, these journeys are things that we deal with in our day to day.” - Keanu Reeves

It is a future in which the world is a simulated reality created by machines with artificial intelligence. This reality was created in order create an energy source for the machines and their way of life. The humans were the energy source. The Matrix is used to keep the humans prisoners while they nourish the machines. A small group of humans freed from the Matrix fight the machines. The one that eventually defeats and saves all humans is “the One” – Neo.

Superheroes save the world everyday. Day to day they put on the cape and mask and go out to struggle against injustice or crime. They “suit up and show up”. But it is that traditional “man against … struggle” that superheroes deal with daily. Just like superheroes we deal with the “man against…” issue also. Man against; nature, opposition, negativity, or self. Just like a superhero we “suit up and show up.” Except our masks and capes is our physical, spiritual and emotional balance. If we are in balance, then we can handle any situation – any “man against…struggle” that may come up.

Beast - Magnetic Personality

Beast, Henry McCoy, is one of my favorite X Men. I loved his struggle with being a Mutant. He didn’t want to be a mutant and tried changing – He tried hiding his mutation. Nothing worked. Even after all the experiments he realized there is nothing he could do but accept his blue fur and animal appearance. He accepted his differences to become a better person. This reminds me of my own story – living in the closet. Thank you everyone that accepted me for who I am and gently making me aware of true self and leading me out of the closet. Making me aware of my “Magnetic Personality”. I live for the “magnetic personalities”.

Magnetic Personality

“The Vision’s okay—he flies—But if it weren’t for my exceptionally long arms –and my Magnetic Personality—he’d be picking his newlywed witch off the floor with a towel! Do drop in, lady!” - Beast*

Dr. Henry (Hank) McCoy is a blue furred super strong mutant, Beast, as he likes to be called by his fellow X-men. Hank was one of the original X-men and he did not always have blue fur. He had extra large hands and feet; he was quite agile, strong, and fast. He was always ashamed to be a mutant and tried to change that. Hank experimented on himself to cure his mutation; the result increased his mutation. Now he is more beast like, with blue fur with super strength and agility. Now he accepts his mutation and uses it to increase that “magnetic personality”. who could resist a cute and cuddly brilliant blue Beast?

We are who we are, there is no way to change that. Buddha’s advice, “Make of yourself a light.” Be who you are and shine brightly. This cannot be said enough. Why hide what you do best? Using the best parts of our personality we can help, support, and offer comfort to our communities, families and friends. When we are ourselves to the best of our abilities we find our “magnetic personality” and we become the heroes we always wanted to be.

Element Lad - Insulated

The Legion of Superheroes is my favorite comics. They hold a special place in my heart. Here was a group of kids that not just protected the earth but the galaxy. They protected all beings simply because they existed. They accepted members based on their powers and gifts not their skin color or orientation. All were welcome! I try to live my life the same way.

Insulated

“Whew! That bolt would’ve knocked me senseless if I hadn’t insulated myself at the last second by changing my elemental structure to rubber!” - Element Lad*

In the 31st Century there was a planet Trom. The people of this planet had the ability to transmute any element to another element. This ability was tied into their spiritual lives. Transmutation was important to the Trom’s religion. But the villain Roxxas had other plans – he wanted to have objects transmuted to other elements to make him wealthy. The planet’s rulers denied him. In return he destroyed the planet. The only surviving Trommite was a young lad, Jan Arrah. Roxxas kidnaps Jan Arrah.  The Legion of Superheroes rescues Jan and invites him to join the Legion as Element Lad.

It would be really cool to have Elemental or Transmutation powers. It would be nice to magically create insulation that protects us from danger. But we live in the “real world”. We can insulate ourselves however. We do insulate ourselves every day. Practicing balance (physical, spiritual, emotional) is a form of insulation. Eating right, sharing with friends, prayer and meditation, and treating ourselves like precious objects are all forms of insulation. Look at it as a preparation for things (good and bad) that may show up. Taking very good care of ourselves is an excellent way to prepare for the daily journey.

Quasar - Anger

I get angry – I know, it’s hard to believe. When I get angry it is best to separate myself from the situation. I seek a place to be quiet and calm. Sometimes I’ll hop on the bike for a ride or I’ll even go for a walk. Things that make me angry are rudeness, bullies, closed-mindedness and lack of empathy toward others. These are all things I’ve dealt with in my past. When I see these sign-posts, I know it is time to either stand-up and let my voice be heard or time to step away and gain my composure to return with a new and fresh attitude. I have learned how to stand-up for myself without lashing out or stressing out. It does take practice.

Anger

“Your anger is understandable – but save it until after this battle is won.” - Quasar (Wendell Elvis Vaughn) *

S.H.I.E.L.D. (Strategic, Hazard Intervention, and Espionage Logistics Directorate) acquired the Quantum Bands. These bands give the wearer great cosmic energy to wield. Nerdy and weak S.H.I. E.L.D Agent, Wendell Elvis Vaughn, witnessed several of his fellows S.H.I.E.L.D. Agents perish as they tested the bands. When villains attacked the facility, Wendell donned the Quantum Bands and rescued his fellows. Feeling his energy growing and an imminent explosion approaching Wendell flew into outer space to protect the area. As he flew he knew he was going to die. He made his peace. Wendell decided to follow the spiritual path in front of him. The energy dissipated and Wendell realized that an indomitable will could never wear the bands. The Quantum Bands needed a wearer of flexibility, peace and balance. The hero Quasar, Wendell Elvis Vaughn, became one of Earth’s mightiest heroes.

Have you ever watched Muhammad Ali fight? Ali fought strong with powerful punches. His moves were very much in balance with his mind and spirit but also with his opponent. However, one thing Ali never did was get angry during a match – he kept his anger in check. His fighting was about balance, gracefulness and thought. The fighting is about physical emotional and spiritual health. The winning was about becoming better and proving he was in peak health. Anger can become an issue when we have a project or a job to complete. We do not think clearly when we are angry – we waste energy. We say things we don’t mean. Our hearts beat faster causing us to tire more easily. Then we become too focused and forget the “big picture”. Anger is an emotion; it is a signpost on the path. It is NOT a way of life. Feel the anger, admit the anger and move on the journey. Muhammad Ali said, “Champions aren´t made in the gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them - a desire, a dream, a vision.”

Iron Man - Judgement

I’ll be honest, I judge books by the cover. I’ve gotten better not doing it but I still do. I do know the reasons why – it comes from my doubt, my low self-esteem and my resentments. When I notice that I’m doing it I will look at myself to see what’s going on with me. Then I’ll make a point to get to know the person in question. I find it interesting when I consider someone’s life and find out that we have a lot in common. I love it when their furniture is just as dusty as mine or we have matching baggage.

Judgement

“… If there was an upside to the nightmare we’ve all been through… it is that I was able to put the genie back in the bottle…” - Tony Stark, Iron Man *

What makes a superhero? If we look at their lives, most superheroes are rich, beautiful, and have really exciting lives. But in reading the comics and getting to know the characters we find that their darkest moments is what makes them heroes. If we go further we will find that many of the superheroes have rough living problems to overcome. Look at Iron Man – Tony Stark, heir to a vast multi-million fortune. He turned it into a multi-billion-dollar fortune, tall dark handsome with a girl on both arms – a perfect life? Well, no, the suit of armor he wears is for health, because if he does not remain connected to that suit he will die. Then there’s the alcoholism.  Tony Stark is a recovering alcoholic. Shortly after becoming Iron Man, Tony Stark became an alcoholic. His friends helped him find recovery and now he lives with sobriety like many other recovering alcoholics.

The old cliché “don’t judge a book by its cover” is a good message. Just because someone looks like they have a wonderful life with an iron will, good looks and lots of money does not mean they have a wonderful life. Get to know the person behind the armor. We all have daily problems, we are not perfect, and it is how we deal with the daily life that makes us great. Don’t judge the insides by the outsides. Look beyond the armor and get to know the person on the inside.

Ms. Marvel - Who I Could Be

Carol Danvers is one of my favorite characters. She has always been an influence for me. Although, her main influence wasn’t until 1998 when she became a recovering alcoholic. Then to retake the moniker Ms. Marvel and watch become Captain Marvel. Even though she’s a fictional character to watch someone grow and change means I am growing and changing. As a teacher, I’m lucky becomes I get to see young people grow and change every day.

Who I could be!

This isn't a question of what I'm not. This is a question of who I could be.” - Ms. Marvel*

Carol Danvers is always trying to be better. As the Security Chief for a restricted Air Force Base she was the best at her job. While there she met Dr. Walter Lawson, the Kree/Human Captain Marvel. Carol in an attempt to save Captain Marvel from a Kree explosion is caught in the blast. Afterwards she is given her superpowers. Over the years she’s been experimented on to become “Binary” for a short time. She has had her powers stolen and changed by the X-man Rogue. Eventually coming back to her Air Force roots she took the name Warbird. Through all this Carol Danvers gives it all up and becomes an alcoholic. With the help of friends and colleagues she works through all her issues and once again fights the good fight as Ms. Marvel. Now Carol guards the Earth from other worldly attacks as Captain Marvel.  Carol Danvers strives to be the best of the best.

So what can we learn from Ms. Marvel? To be a Marvel at anything we do but more importantly to always be our best. It is about what we can do. It is about what we can become. We will change, we will grow, and we will become better. So many times our focus should be what we can do in the moment. We have certain qualities that we will never lose but how we express them will change. An artist that paints may one day sculpt. The teacher may become a principal. So definitely it is what we are good at in the moment. Stay in the moment and remember the words of Muhammad Ali, “A man who views the world the same at fifty as he did at twenty has wasted thirty years of his life.”

Jonah Hex - Those “Come-To-Jesus” Meetins

Parent / Teacher Conferences start today. I don’t mind them. I like sitting down with my parents and talking to them. I will have to say some tough things to a couple, but I have already had conversations with them about the tough topics – no one will be shocked. Unless I get shocked. I’ve had those conferences also. I try to be a team player and work with the parents. I know they understand whatever I have to say that is tough comes from love. After saying something tough  I always offer a plan to help them and their child.

Those “Come-To-Jesus” Meetins

“Later, we’re gonna have a ‘Come-To-Jesus’ meetin.” - Jonah Hex *

Raised by an alcoholic father, Woodson Hex was badly abused and eventually sold into slavery. He ran away and was adopted by an Apache Chieftain after Hex rescued the Chieftain from a puma. The truly unfortunate thing Jonah Hex was forced to fight in the Civil War for the side of the Confederates, the very people that sold him into slavery. Through all his battles and tortures Jonah Hex was badly scarred. Jonah eventually became a bounty hunter in the Wild West. Although he is considered horribly disfigured Jonah Hex is respected for his honesty, honor and his high-code of conduct.

So, what are those “Come-to-Jesus” meetings? They are a moment when we are told or shown the truth. Most likely they come from friends who care and are worried about us. A teacher will have meetings like these during the school year. An employer might remind an employee to get to work on time. The friends and family that gather with a loved one to have an intervention about the drug abuse. The parent informing a child about the poor choice of friends. The things to think about is the message and from whom the message comes. If we are going to bring someone to a “Come-to-Jesus” moment, we need to be sure we are accurate and honest. We also need to look at how much we care for the person. For those that receive the messages remember the message comes from love even if it is the employer. To both parties of these “Come-to-Jesus” meetings remember to keep an open-mind and open-heart.

Longshot - Miracles

I’ve been accused of being a Pollyanna. I don’t care, it's true. I believe in miracles and I see miracles every day. If I can see the miracle then I know there happening in my life.

Miracles

“Gotta keep my motives pure. I forgot that – I know the way…the miracles will follow!” - Longshot*

Some heroes are just lucky. Longshot is from the Mojoverse where the tyrant, Mojo creates scenarios for Mojo’s personal entertainment. Longshot was a free slave and fought against Mojo. Head geneticist Arize gave Longshot and others slaves free will and specific genetic gifts to help in their battles. Longshot has the specific abilities of Psychometry (reading psychic residue), Probability Manipulation (causing probability to move in your favor), Superhuman Agility and a strong Healing Factor. People watching Longshot will be amazed, he can track his prey easily, he never misses and cannot be held for long. With these gifts everything Longshot does seem to be miraculous. The truly miraculous thing about Longshot is his mullet hairstyle.

Miracles – an extraordinary extreme or unusual event or accomplishment that seems so strange or wonderful that some would describe it as divine. Some people take miracles as purely divine while others think that miracles happen every day and can be seen as the sunrise or the blossoming of a flower. Seeking miracles will only reveal miracles. Many members of Alcoholics Anonymous use the phrase, “don’t quit before the miracle,” to hang on and white knuckle their sobriety. To a recovering alcoholic the simple change and the release from the desire of alcohol is a “miracle”. This is all about our focus or how we view the world. Is it possible to look at the sun or a flower or even a work of art and see a miracle? Look for miracles and they are found. Just remember the mullet is not miraculous.

Astrea - Imperfect Humans

We are all imperfect – we all have flaws. Then why do we point fingers at each other? Because we see the flaws in ourselves. I learned a long time ago, if I can see the growth or change in a person then there is growth or change happening in me. I know that if I am pointing my judgmental finger at someone it is because I don’t want people looking at my imperfections.

Imperfect Humans

“And where do we imperfect humans fit into your perfect world?” - Astrea*

Many centuries ago, three carefully selected young Earthlings were transported from their native lands to my faraway world. Here they were granted astounding powers and eternal youth. Then returned to Earth, their mission, to watch over the human race helping the good in it to survive and flourish. In the course of history their names have become legend. Hercules empowered with the strength of a hundred men. Astrea is able to assume any living form. Mercury the amazing athlete can match the speed of light. Working together with Sentinel One and the maintenance robot Mo, these teenage guardians form the greatest team the world has ever known “The Space Sentinels.”

“Don’t judge a book by the cover”, is a colloquialism we have heard often. We all have little flaws here and there. Our noses are too big, our hair too curly or we may not have the perfect skin. That is what makes us unique. Look at the person who was seriously overweight then lost the weight becoming a healthier person. Today they still keep the weight off. Look at the person – not the body. He or she worked very hard to lose the weight they still work at keeping healthy mental state. Think about what they must do each day to keep the weight off – are they flawed? Think about the recovering alcoholic with 25 years sobriety – is she flawed? What about the kid that gets bullied everyday for being different. Is he flawed? Today when we point the finger of “imperfection” at someone remember there are 3 fingers pointing back at us. Try accepting people for who they are. Try accepting yourself for who you are. TLC’s “Unpretty” is a good song to listen to, “You can buy your hair if it won't grow, you can fix your nose if you say so, you can buy all the make-up that M.A.C. can make, but if you can look inside you, find out who am I too….” Try accepting the “imperfections” today and accept the person inside.

Saint Walker - Robots

Saint Walker is one of my favorite characters. I connect so much with him. His first appearance came about after my adulthood. I connect with him because of his power – Hope. Also, his ideas of meditation and connectiveness. I agree with him, we are all robots programmed to be and look certain ways. I believe human DNA is the zeroes and ones for the human program.

Robots

“I believe we are all robots of a sort…each of us are programmed in our own special way.” -  Saint Walker*

A sun is dying and the planet Astonia is in great peril.  A priest, Brother Bro’Dee Walker tries to calm the masses. He brings his people hope and calms their worries and fears. In that moment a blue ring chooses Bro’ Dee Saint Walker. The first Blue Lantern is found. With his newly acquired ring he heals his dying sun and saves his world – with the power of Hope. Blue Lanterns have the ability to instill great Hope. When a Blue Lantern is near a Green Lantern the wearer of the green ring is even more powerful because their Will is empowered with Hope. Saint Walker is the first Blue Lantern and uses his abilities empowered by the oath, "In fearful day, in raging night, with strong hearts full, our souls ignite. When all seems lost in the War of Light, Look to the stars, for hope burns bright!" to help others find Hope.

There are those who will be offended by Saint Walker’s comment. He is not saying we are soulless emotionless automatons. He is saying that we all have been programmed in our own special way within our DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid), that genetic material that programs our eye color hair color or height, etcetera.  Could our DNA program our creativity, our humor or our athletic abilities? Could we be programmed to think more analytically? We can also compare our minds to the working of a computer. The Ego often fights thoughts like this stating – “I Choose My Own Path! I have free will!” Tell the Ego it’s OK that there is hope. These are just the workings of the body and nothing is written in stone. It is OK to follow a chosen path. Likewise, it is OK to change the direction a path is taking.  The point here is to accept self as self. Be comfortable in the self.
